When identifying classic conventions that particular music genres have, there are clear differences between some, whilst others ave extreme similarities.
Pop Music
Conventions of typical pop music videos are:
- Up Beat
- Dance Routines
- Bright Costumes
- High Key Lighting
- Colourful
- Fast Paced Cuts
- Tend to be Narrative or Concept videos (however, some may argue that by including choreographed dance routines shows aspects of performance)
Rock Music
Conventions of typical rock music videos are:
- Instruments (Performance based videos)
- Dark
- Low Key Lighting
- Staged (Act present on a stage)
- Heavy/Prominent Eye Make-Up
Indie Music
- Instruments
- Mixture of High and Low Key Lighting
- Has some performance aspects but not as much as rock
The Main Difference Between Rock and Indie
The conventions of rock and indie music videos tend to be extremely similar but there is one main aspect that separates the two. Indie music, unlike rock, leads with a concept. This means that there is primarily a combination of both performance and concept factors. Moreover, Indie music tends not to be as 'dark' as the lighting used is mixed between the different keys and the make-up worn to address the band/artist is not as bold or noticeable.
